Ever heard of Chromium-6 or hexavalent chromium? Probably not, unless you watched the 2000 movie, Erin Brockovich, starring Julia Roberts. The movie is based on the real-life story of a woman working as a file clerk in a Los Angeles law firm in 1992. Ms. Brockovich came across a startling case file containing blood samples and documents against the San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric Company that her boss, attorney Ed Masry was handling for the citizens of Hinkley, California.
Ms. Brockovich researched the case in great detail, interviewing the residents and their families suffering severe illness, and uncovered evidence that the illnesses, as well as some fatal cases were linked to the presence of Chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium) in the town's drinking water. The source of the carcinogen in the water was found to have come from the PG&E station in Hinkley, CA. Her thorough work to uncover the source of the problem, and seek justice for more than 600 residents of Hinkley, resulted in a successful trial case which was settled in 1996 for $333 million! Erin Brockovich remains dedicated and active as a consumer advocate and environmental activist.
It’s been nearly 25 years since Ms. Brockovich, and the small law firm she worked for won their case against the company responsible for polluting the local ground water with this chemical. The presence of chromium-6 in municipal water is of major concern because even minute amounts have been shown to cause cancer. Studies have found that exposure to chromium-6, whether inhaled or ingested, can cause liver damage, lung cancer, reproductive and developmental problems.
Wondering if chromium-6 is in your local drinking water? Not only is chromium-6 found in tap water today, but it’s levels have escalated in major proportions. The Environmental Working Group has done extensive testing on chrominum-6 in drinking water across the nation.
Disgustingly, chromium-6 has been found in the drinking water of every state. The EWG reported in July 2017 that about 250 million Americans are supplied water with chromium-6 contamination. The national results have been compiled in an easy-to-use, interactive map which shows where chromium-6 has been located and the levels reported. Use this map to check the water test results in your area.
Reverse Osmosis to the Rescue
Everyone needs and deserves to drink pure water. Be proactive about your health. Do you have a filter on your water? It might not be as efficient at removing dangerous contaminates as your health needs it to be. While carbon filters: carbon block and granulated activated carbon filter most of the bad stuff out of tap water, it doesn’t remove chromium, fluoride or other dangerous contaminants.
But there's good news. Reverse osmosis (RO) technology provides a higher level of filtration. It effectively removes dissolved particles from the water, including pesticides, arsenic, and chromium-6.
